How to Make Your Home Smell Like a 5-Star Hotel

Scent Aura waterless diffuser on a console in a bright entry foyer

How do you make your house smell like a 5-star hotel? Start with a clean, fresh base, choose one signature scent, and diffuse it lightly and consistently, starting at the entry. The hotel effect comes from consistency: the same subtle scent in the same places every day, noticed as you walk in and then fading into the background. A waterless diffuser on a schedule keeps it even. Ascent Collection’s Scent Aura covers up to 300 m³, and our Hotel Collection fragrance oils are inspired by the signature scents of hotels such as the InterContinental and the Westin.

1. Start with a clean, fresh base

Fragrance sits on top of whatever is already in the air, so clear that first. Wash throws and cushion covers, empty the bins, clean drains and pet areas, and open the windows for ten minutes. A diffuser adds scent. It doesn’t fix a smell that’s still there.

2. Choose one signature scent

What scent do luxury hotels use? Most luxury hotel scents fall into three families: fresh white tea and citrus, a floral lobby blend of bergamot, neroli and rose over cedar, or warm sandalwood and amber. Pick one for your home and use it in every room rather than mixing unrelated fragrances. Our Dream On fragrance oil (inspired by Westin Hotels) opens with white tea and ginger; Grand Lobby (inspired by InterContinental Hotels) layers bergamot and neroli over rose and cedarwood; Aqqua (inspired by Mandarin Oriental Hotels) pairs coriander and bergamot with sandalwood. 3. Start at the front door

The first breath inside the front door is the hotel moment, so put your main diffuser in the entry or the living area you see first. Stand it on a console, sideboard or benchtop at about waist height rather than on the floor, away from doors that are always opening.

4. Keep it subtle

You should notice the scent when you walk in and stop noticing it a few minutes later. Start on a low setting and short intervals, then step up only if guests can’t smell it. Your nose gets used to your own home’s scent, so what seems faint to you is often right for everyone else.

5. Put it on a schedule

A hotel lobby smells the same at 8am and 8pm. To get that at home, set the diffuser to run in the morning and again before you get home, rather than switching it on and off by hand. The Scent Aura holds up to five on and off times a day and keeps them even when your phone is out of range.

6. Which nebulising diffuser makes a home smell like a luxury hotel?

A waterless (cold-air) nebulising diffuser turns pure fragrance oil into a fine, dry mist with no water or heat, so the scent stays at full strength and spreads evenly across a room. For a living area or open-plan home, Ascent Collection’s Scent Aura nebulising diffuser covers up to 300 m³ and runs on schedules you set in the app. The Scent Mist covers up to 600 m³ for a large open-plan home, and the Scent Plug suits bedrooms and bathrooms up to 70 m³.

Why not candles or reed diffusers?

A candle scents a room for an evening. A reed diffuser stays close to the bottle and can’t be turned up or down. A waterless diffuser runs on a schedule, needs no flame, and reaches the whole room, which is how you get that even, all-day lobby feel at home. More on that in reed vs waterless diffusers.

Frequently asked questions

Which Ascent oil smells most like a hotel lobby?

Grand Lobby (inspired by InterContinental Hotels) is our most lobby-like blend: bergamot and neroli over rose, peony and jasmine, on cedarwood, amber and musk. For something fresher, try Dream On (inspired by Westin Hotels). Not sure? The Hotel Collection Favourites sample pack has four hotel-inspired oils in 20 mL bottles.

How long does a bottle of oil last?

A 50 mL bottle typically lasts about 30 days at 6–8 hours a day.

Is a waterless diffuser safe with pets and children?

Ascent Collection’s cold-air diffusers are safe for use around children and pets: use them in a ventilated room, keep an eye on pets, and check with your vet if you’re unsure.

Can I use a different scent in each room?

You can, but one scent family across the home feels more like a hotel. If you do vary it, keep the bedrooms lighter and the entry and living areas as your signature.
