What is a waterless diffuser?
It’s any diffuser that disperses fragrance without adding water. The ultrasonic diffuser you’ve probably seen in homes floats a few drops of oil on water and vibrates it into a damp vapour. A waterless diffuser skips the water, so the oil reaches the air at full strength.

How does a waterless diffuser work?
Most quality waterless diffusers use nebulisation, also called cold-air diffusion:
A bottle of neat fragrance oil connects to an atomiser head.
A small air pump pushes pressurised air through the atomiser.
The airflow draws the oil up and breaks it into tiny particles.
The particles leave the diffuser as a fine, dry mist that spreads through the room and hangs evenly in the air.
With no heat involved, warming doesn’t change the fragrance. With no water, the room stays dry and the scent stays undiluted. You set the timer and intensity to control how much oil goes out, and the scent holds at that level through the day.
Types of waterless diffuser
Nebulising (cold-air) diffusers
Pressurised air atomises neat oil into a dry mist. You get the strongest and most even result of any type, which is why it’s used for open-plan homes and commercial spaces. Every Ascent diffuser works this way.
Fan and pad diffusers
A small fan blows air across a pad soaked in oil. They’re cheap and simple. The trade-off is a lighter scent that fades as the pad dries, and the top notes of a fragrance tend to evaporate first.
HVAC scent diffusers

What oil should I use in a waterless diffuser?
Use oils formulated for cold-air or nebulising diffusion, because they’re thin enough to atomise cleanly. Thick oils and carrier-oil blends can clog the atomiser and won’t disperse evenly.

How to use a waterless diffuser
Attach the oil bottle to the diffuser.
Put it on a stable surface with some room around it so the mist can circulate.
Start low with a short timer, then turn it up if the room needs more.
Keep a door or window open for ventilation.
How to clean a waterless diffuser
Give it a quick clean every 6–8 weeks, and every time you switch scents. Pour a small amount of Diffuser Cleaning Solution into the bottle, attach it and run the diffuser for 10–15 minutes to clear the atomiser. Let it dry before you add a new scent. Never clean it with water, because water damages the atomiser.
Are waterless diffusers safe?
They run without heat or flame, and there’s no standing water to worry about. Ascent Collection diffusers and oils are safe for homes with children and pets* when used with normal household ventilation.
A note on pets: animals are more sensitive to fragrance than we are. Diffuse in well-ventilated rooms and leave a door open so pets can move away. Keep diffusers and oils out of reach. Cats and birds are especially sensitive, so introduce scent gradually and check with your vet first. Stop if you notice any discomfort.
