Electric Diffusers Explained: Types and How to Choose

What types of electric diffuser are there? There are four main types of electric diffuser for home fragrance: ultrasonic diffusers, which mix a few drops of oil with water; waterless (cold-air) diffusers, which turn undiluted fragrance oil into a fine, dry mist; plug-in diffusers, small units that sit in a power point; and electric wax or oil warmers, which use gentle heat. For a strong, even scent across a living area, a waterless diffuser is the best fit, because nothing dilutes the oil. Ultrasonic models suit a bedside table, and plug-ins suit small rooms such as bathrooms.

How do you choose an electric diffuser for your home?

How do you choose an electric diffuser for your home? Start with the room: measure its volume in cubic metres (floor area times ceiling height) and choose a diffuser rated for at least that. Then decide on power, either a wall socket for a permanent spot or a rechargeable battery if you want to move it between rooms. Check whether you can schedule it, how much oil it holds, which oils it takes, and how often it needs cleaning. A waterless diffuser on a schedule gives the most consistent scent; an ultrasonic one needs refilling with water and regular tank cleaning.

Do electric diffusers use a lot of power?

A diffuser is a small appliance, and a waterless one sprays in short bursts with pauses in between. Running it on a schedule, only when you’re home, keeps both power and oil use down. The Scent Aura’s battery lasts up to 200 hours on its lowest setting, so you can also run it without a cord.

Frequently asked questions

Is an electric diffuser better than a reed diffuser?

For a whole room, usually yes. A reed diffuser scents the space near the bottle and can’t be adjusted. An electric diffuser can be turned up, scheduled and switched off. More in reed vs waterless diffusers.

Can I leave an electric diffuser on all day?

You can schedule it to run during the day, but a waterless diffuser works best with short sprays and pauses. That keeps the scent light and makes the oil last longer.

How long does a bottle of oil last?

A 50 mL bottle typically lasts about 30 days at six to eight hours a day.

Are electric diffusers safe around children and pets?

Ascent Collection’s cold-air diffusers use no heat or water. They’re safe for use around children and pets: use them in a ventilated room, keep an eye on pets, and check with your vet if you’re unsure.
